Wii U Getting Unity Engine Support

Nintendo’s next generation console is set to better support for a wider variety of games, after it was announced this morning that it had signed a deal to allow those that make use of the Unity Engine, to develop their games for the Wii U.

Unity Technologies, the company that developed the engine, had previously signed a deal with Nintendo over its usage on the Wii a couple of years ago. Since then, many indi developers have made use of it to get their games on the platform, though it’s also seen a lot of usage on the PC as a free to play mmo engine. Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers should also be familiar with it.

Head at Unity Technologyies, David Helgason said that: ”Nintendo’s unfettered access to Unity will produce a wealth of insanely good games from knowledgeable Nintendo developers and the Wii U deployment add-on will create an amazing opportunity for our massive community of developers to showcase their incredible creativity on one of the most anticipated and innovative gaming platforms to date.”

The fact that the same engine is being used by two generations of console however, gives further hints to the idea that the Wii U is anything but a powerhouse. Still, increased support for independent developers is exactly the sort of thing Nintendo needs to recapture some of the casual gaming market lost to the likes of smartphones and tablets.
