Nintendo Wii U sales not as high as expected

Nintendo has been forced to cut back its sales predictions for the newly released Wii U console from 5.5 million to 4 million by the end of the year. It also initially said that it would manage to push 24 million Wii U games by 2014, that has also been revised to a much reduced 16 million.

This forecast is so poor in fact that Nintendo believes the Wii U will be the main cause for it having an unprofitable year.

Still, it’s not like nobody is buying these things. So far Nintendo has sold just over three million Wii U consoles and just under 12 million games. The biggest percentage of these was shifted in the US, followed by Europe and Japan trailing – though impressively there’s not much different between the far east nation and the entirety of Europe.

“Owing to the fact that the Wii U hardware sales have a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits, the operating loss was 5.8 billion yen,” Nintendo said. “As a result of exchange gains totalling 22.2 billion yen due to the depreciation of the yen at the end of calendar year 2012, however, ordinary income was 22.7 billion yen and net income was 14.5 billion yen.”
